Indiana Cruises Past Northwestern State 90-72


Christian Watford and Maurice Creek each scored 17 points.

The Hoosiers never trailed in the game and built a 38-23 lead with 6:52 to go on a three-pointer by senior Devan Dumes. The visiting Demons would not go away and the Hoosiers went into halftime with a 45-35 lead.
Indians scored the first four points of the second half, but NSU used a layup by Damon Jones to cut the IU lead to 59-50 with 10:37 to go. IU would then go on an 8-0 run, capped by a triple by sophomore Verdell Jones III to make it 67-50 a minute later.

Jeremiah Rivers dished out 10 assists, and reserves Derek Elston (12 points) and Dumes (11 points) also contributed for the Hoosiers (3-3), who never trailed in the contest. Indiana made 34 of 44 free throws, with Watford and Creek each making 7 of 8from the foul line. Twelve players scored for the Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers will host #25 Maryland in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Christian Watford finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Maurice Creek added 14 points and Verdell Jones scored 13 to lead Indiana past South Carolina-Upstate 69-61 on Monday night.

The Hoosiers are 2-0 for the third straight season, and it is the first time they've won back-to-back since late November last year.

The Spartans (0-2) were led by Mezie Uzochukwu with 14 points.

Indiana overcame a sluggish start with a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take a 16-9 lead. It closed the half on an 8-2 run to make it 32-25, then scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half to take a 40-27 lead.

Upstate never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

THE OPENING TIP
The Hoosiers open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13, when they take on the University of Memphis in the FedEx Forum at 6 p.m. ET. Catch all of the action on WHCC 105.1 FM as Jeremy Gray calls the play-by-play from Memphis.

ABOUT THE COACHES
IU head coach Felisha Legette-Jack enters her fourth season at the helm of the Hoosiers with a record of 58-40 and a career mark of 112-103. In three season, she has led the Hoosiers to 18-plus wins and three consecutive trips to the postseason.

Memphis head coach Melissa McFerrin enters her second season with the Tigers after recording a 12-18 record last year. She owns a career mark of 62-88 over five seasons.

WHAT'S COMING UP
The Hoosiers open a three-game home stand on Sunday, Nov. 15, when they host IUPUI in Assembly Hall at 2 p.m. ET. IU will then host Cincinnati at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Missouri on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

NOTES OF INTEREST
• Friday's meeting marks the first between Indiana and Memphis.
• The Hoosiers won a school record 21 games in 2008-09 and took their third straight trip to the postseason, reaching the quarterfinals of the WNIT.
• Indiana returns two starters to this year's squad in senior Jamie Braun and junior Jori Davis.
• IU's next win will be it's 600th in program history.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis enters the 2009-10 season after going 12-18 last season and finishing 10th in Conference-USA. The Tigers return three starters from last year, including Ramses Lonlack (8.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 65 steals), Alex Winchell (7.9 points, 1.8 rebounds) and Savannah Ellis (5.3 points, 6.4 rebounds).

WHAT BRAUN DOES FOR IU
Senior Jamie Braun returns after averaging nearly 13 points, five rebounds and four assists per game last season. She became the 21st Hoosier to join the 1,000 Point Club and enters her final campaign with 1,221 points, ranking 14th all-time in program history. Braun also owns 170 career steals and is just two from tying Zan Jeffries (1988-91) for eighth in the record book.

DAVIS KEEPS GETTING BETTER
From her freshman season to her sophomore year, Jori Davis' game has continued to improve. She enters her junior season after ranking among the top 15 in the Big Ten in scoring with 11.8 points per game and was among the top 10 in 3-point field goal percentage (36.1) a year ago.

HOOSIERS IN ROAD-OPENERS
The Indiana women's basketball team is 16-16 in road openers since the 1977-78 season. Since Coach Jack's arrival, the Hoosiers have gone 2-1 with wins over Kentucky (11/12/06; 54-51) and Ball State (11/17/07; 76-71).

HOME SWEET HOME
The Hoosiers will play 17 games in Assembly Hall beginning with their two exhibition contests on Nov. 1 and Nov. 5. IU opens the regular season in Bloomington on Sunday, Nov. 15 against IUPUI. The home non-conference slate also features Cincinnati (Nov. 18), Missouri (Nov. 22), Florida State (Dec. 3), UT Martin (Dec. 9) and Toledo (Dec. 22).
